When I reflect on what Marietta means to me I have so many memories, but today I am reflecting on what I remember of my years at War Memorial Park. When we talk about personal memories, I wonder how much I remember and what was real? What I know is real was getting stuck on the merry-go-round and puking behind a tree. I know getting hit in the eye with the tether ball was real.
Now that I am past the real memories, let’s get into the memories. War Memorial Park was the playground of my youth. Not only did I get to spend nights playing, I also got to spend my summer days being a Marietta kid at our camp! Our camp was summer recreation, it was truly the best way to meet new friends and feel a part of the community.
My story is a little different, going to a school outside of the district and not having the chance to meet Marietta kids during the school year, so I looked forward to the time to be a Marietta kid with my neighbors. I remember showing up and always feeling included. Even though I was the outsider, I was just a normal kid.
I had fun learning art from Staci Hummel, who at the time was an amazing role model to me and is now my neighbor and friend. I’ll never forget standing on my tippy toes looking over the counter to rent out games to play with my friends. I mean, let’s be honest, no one wanted me on their red rover team- I am not athletic! My coach Glenn Orr once told me that I run like a girl!
On Wednesdays, we left War Memorial Park and went to Mountville pool for the day (this is no longer a part of the GEARS program). When I tell you I thought I was pulling into my own Dirty Dancing resort, I am not lying. It was magical- snack money, lines at the diving board, and mischievous behavior. My Marietta Rec story is my story and I am so happy to have these memories. I would highly recommend all Marietta kids to spend a summer thinking War Memorial Park is the best place on Earth.
