Please plan to be a part of Memorial Day in Maytown on Monday, May 26th, to honor and thank our men and women who have sacrificed for us, both those who have fought and those who are fighting today for our freedom.
The day will start with breakfast at the Maytown Historical Society Museum at 4 West High Street. Breakfast will be served from 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. and will include a variety of breakfast items. Service will be either eat in or take out.
Also beginning at 8:00 a.m. will be the Antique/Art/Collectibles/Food event on East High Street and around the square. This event is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 809.
At 12:30, there will be a program in the square which will begin with a prayer. Members of the Bainbridge Band will provide music, and wreaths will be placed on the veterans’ markers. The names of area veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice will be read. The ceremony will end with the traditional taps and a benediction.
Following the ceremony in the square, all children and families are invited to participate in decorating the graves of local veterans with flowers provided by Floral Designs of Mount Joy. Those who want to help should meet at the Maytown Reformed UCC Church, 11 East Elizabeth Street immediately following the ceremony at the square. After decorating the graves in the Reformed Cemetery, the group will walk to the Lutheran and Union Cemeteries at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 11 North Queen Street, to decorate graves of veterans there. All are welcome to participate in this important Maytown community tradition.
The parade steps off promptly at 4:00 p.m. from Legion Park. Judy and John Cook, the honored grand marshals, will lead the parade. Families and groups are invited to compete for prizes by dressing up or decorating to match the theme to honor our veterans: “They Gave Up Their Tomorrows for Our Todays”. Participants may either walk, ride a bike, or ride on a float. There will be four monetary prizes and judging will begin at 3:30 p.m. at the parade lineup on West High Street. Veterans who would like to participate in the parade are welcome to ride on the veterans float.
