Cherry Trees on Front Street, Marietta, PA
In the early 1990s, Marietta resident James Sagris spearheaded the planting of about 150 Kwanzan cherry trees along Front Street in Marietta. A native of Sheffield, Massachusetts, Sagris was an art dealer, conservator and ceramic restorer who moved to a Front Street home in the late 1980s. After people admired some cherry trees he had planted in front of his home at 48 E. Front St., Sagris conceived the idea of having them planted all along Front Street. The cherry trees in Marietta are the same variety that are planted along the Potomac Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C.
